A Gold or Metallic Alloy Crown Might Be Needed to Restore a Molar with a Large Cavity

The molars in the back of your mouth are often called upon to do a lot of grinding and chewing tough foods. When one of them is compromised by a large cavity, it can severely impair the function of your mouth. In many of these cases, your dentists, Drs. Rauzman, Kim, and Pallotta, will often recommend restoring the tooth with a dental crown made from durable gold or metallic alloy.

After examining the tooth, they will use a drill to remove the tooth enamel layer, leaving the healthy interior of the tooth completely unaffected. Known as an abutment, this post-like structure will eventually anchor the crown firmly in your mouth.

At the end of the first appointment, they will form an impression of the abutment and surrounding teeth. Then, the abutment will be covered by a hard, plastic cap known as a temporary crown. The impression will be sent off to a dental lab technician who will custom make your new crown.

We will call you back in for a short second appointment when your crown is completed. At this time, he will remove the temporary crown and will cement your new crown into place over the abutment.
